This morning when I checked the eggs I had one peachick on it's feet and a white peachick newly hatched from it's egg! This afternoon two more hatchlings emerged. I keep checking for peep holes in the other eggs...maybe more with escape their eggs in the night.
Today was Day 28. I set the eggs at 6 pm June 9th and really did not expect babies before 6 pm tonight. But these babies were like my own babies and came early! All the books I've read say peachicks take from 28 to 34 days.
An interesting bit of news is that white peacocks and black shouldered peacocks are all variations of blue peacocks, they are not separate breeds as I supposed. I have several new books about peacocks so I am learning a lot about my birds. I am posting pictures of the two first peachickss and another of the third as it emerged from the egg. They look so much like baby chicks only they are so much bigger! I would guess they are at least twice as big as a baby chicken. They have longer necks, BIG feet and fatter tummies. If we have more by tomorrow morning I'll post a picture of the whole flock!
I had a surprise at the peacock pen today. One of the peacocks is shedding his long tail feathers! I came back with a huge bouquet of colorful feathers! I would be wondering about this, but recently read that peacocks do shed their tail feathers. It has been extremely hot here lately. It would be a great time to shed those hot and heavy feathers!
